Day 160 – EU – Greece [Kanali to Lefkada]

31st July 2020
Run: 35km

Second day of the heatwave, a short but tough day on the road

Today’s run was split in two parts. From Kanali to Preveza first, 13.5km run to reach the underwater tunnel – forbidden to pedestrians and cyclists. I looked for buses but it was too early. I resorted to taking a taxi, the ride was short as the tunnel itself stands at just over 1.5km. This tunnel links the region of Epirus to that of Aetolia and is the only way straight – the other option is 130km by road.

I emerged from the other side of the tunnel to resume the run and thought the last 21.5km would be somewhat easy. I was so wrong! The temperatures were ridiculously high again, and as I resumed the run, I struggled to regulate my body temperature and the sweating got out of control soon. This time, I recognised the symptoms immediately.

I took plenty of breaks, used ice collected at petrol stations on the way to cool down. Took drinks out of the fridge and kept them as cold as possible in my isotherm bag. This made the progression much much slower than I had anticipated. Like yesterday, I went for the shaded side of the road if/when there was some (and that was a rare occasion) thinking: the difference between left and right was as high as 10 Celsius!

As I arrived near Lefkada, I passed by the Santa Maura Castle and its fortifications, beautifully standing on a swamps area by the sea. Then I took the floating bridge that connects the island to the mainland. I ran through the pedestrian streets of the city centre before reaching my accommodation. I don’t think I will do much more walking about for the rest of the day!

The heat today had such a grip – it felt heavy and sucked up a lot of my energy.

As I’m finishing today’s write up I read that the Hellenic National Meteorological Service has issued a “Yellow Warning for Extreme High Temperature in effect until 8pm for Western Greece” – I certainly hope tomorrow won’t be that hot.
