Day 159 – EU – Greece [Lichnos to Kanali]
30th July 2020
And it got very hot indeed!
I left at 6am, just before sunrise and though it was quite dark, I knew I wouldn’t regret it. The road was very quiet, with no traffic at all in the first hour of the run.
By 8:30am it was already 40 Celsius (in the direct sun, that is) and from this point on, I tried to run on the shaded side of the road, which means I was often found against traffic, like walkers do.
I stopped for lunch at km43, with still 2.5km to go, which is very unusual for me. But today I am resting in a secluded place and I knew I wouldn’t be able to find a decent meal upon arrival. It felt a bit funny to resume the run on a full stomach!
When booking today’s accommodation, I thought it would be a great idea to go glamping by the sea, in a yurt with all mod cons. Except aircon of course. It would have been a really brilliant idea if today wasn’t “Heatwave Thursday” I guess! I’m managing ok with a stand-fan I begged for at reception. And it is still awesome, regardless, to be in a yurt, by the seaside, with the songs of the cicadas in the background.
Tomorrow will be interesting: I’m running to Lefkada. The only way to get there is by going through an underwater tunnel 1.5km long. And this tunnel is not allowed to pedestrians and cyclists. Gonna have to figure out how to get across…
