Day 70 – EU – France [Port La Nouvelle to Valras Plage]

13th February 2020
Run: 46km

A long day on the road, finally snapping the pink flamingos, and a stream of ghost towns by the sea

The first part of today’s run was on trails, around the lake of Berre, in the Regional Natural Park of “Narbonnaise”. Tranquility. A paradise for wild birds. And I finally got to get a much closer encounter with the Pink Flamingos. It made me really happy. My pictures are not really good in comparison to what I saw. But the birds’ sights are engraved in my mind – in much better resolution.

The road then swerved around the lake and towards the coast. This part of the French coast is packed with campings, bungalows parks, summer residences. All these are empty at winter time. It felt like crossing a never ending flow of ghost towns. It made the run much more lonely than I had anticipated. I had imagined running across lively seaside towns I guess!

The run today was 46km and I took it easy, allowing for snacks breaks, seeing the sights… which means I arrived around 1:30pm. By the time I am showered and changed, even if it is slightly before 2pm, it is a challenge to find a place to eat for lunch. I have to find a way to get up much earlier and set off before 7:30am. That’s the goal for tomorrow, which is another long day, around 46km.
