Day 31 – EU – Spain [La Mamola to El Ejido]
5th January 2020
A long day on the road, between the sea and the greenhouses’ white plastic sheets covered fields…
I met a road companion yesterday after lunch! Violette Duval (see picture on the left) is a young French woman who left West of France in April last year, walking with her cart. She has already gone down the West coast of France and Portugal, and we have pretty much followed the same route until here, what a coincidence! Violette walks, and she gets approximately 20km done each day. She is doing so to bring awareness to a disease she got herself, fibromyalgia. Her journey will end in about 3 months, when she reaches the French town of Marseille.
Today we shared the same road. And since there was no accommodation option on the way from La Mamola to El Ejido, Violette had to walk 45km today. Her day is gonna be way longer than mine. I thought of her journey as I ran, and left her a little chocolate treat behind a km marker on the way. I hope she found it!
The landscape is turning into all white plastic sheets covered fields. I could not find a way to take a picture that would convey what I saw, the immensity of it. So, to give you an idea of what it’s like, I show you the Google aerial view of El Ejido. El EJido is a small city of 85k inhabitants. I have circled it in red on the picture. Everything around it… for kms on end… are greenhouse farming amenities, all white plastic sheets covered fields. That is quite enormous. And the whole region is as such. I wonder how many days of running till I get out of it!
